When depressing the pedal resistance is felt and the engine does not rev. prior to this fault the battery had totally died.

Sounds like your throttle potentimeter is faulty.
If you look around the throttle pedal you will see a plastic box.
Check the wiring to it and if you can get the cover off check there is no water present.
Also you need to check the throttle position sensor on the side of the throttle body.

because you dont say the yr of the car, ill asume the acc cable must be stretched and need to be replaced

if you go to the throtle while the engine is on, move manually the throtle if your car respond, check the cable and the throtle spring could be loose or stretched too
