I have a brand new 2008 BMW 535i that is sitting at my florida home. I want to bring it to my home in the north (indiana) and have it as my main car here because this is where I spend most of my time. I'm not sure how it will be in the winter months though. I wold likely put either a winter or all season tire on the vehicle just before the snow flies.

Can anyone attest to how the 5 series (not the all-wheel drive version) is in typical snowy conditions?

If you plan to drive your 535i in the sloppy Indiana wet weather, I would suggest you use the all season tires. You should put a lot of emphasis on obtaining a heated garage where you can remove the salt from your car's finish. You should never attempt to use snow chains on your BMW. There is not sufficient clearance for them. Best idea would be to park your BMW in a garage during the freezing weather. Buy an older vehicle with engine over the driving axle, for the greatest traction and safety. You will have not control over the guy or gal who slides into your car when the weather is icy and/or slippery.
