Go into "source" on the stereo system and select AUX. Are you trying to operate it through your stereo/multi-function steering wheel? If you are, this won't work on the aux connector as it is not full i-pod connectivity. Also, try turning the volume on your ipod up to full and turn the volume up on the car stereo. Failing that the connection is faulty, it will be covered under warranty so take it into local dealer and they will be able to repair the problem.
I work at a MINI dealer so the "source" button on the BMW might be named different.
