Is the mechanic trusted?
You have a BMW and shouldn't give you so much troubles

4 primary things you need for it to run: spark, fuel, timing (both spark, fuel injection and valve timing) and compression; if the timing belt is older/worn, you may have 'jumped a tooth' or broken the timing belt... I would check for compression next. Assuming the engine was running well before failure; three not so uncommon problems with this motor are worn cylinder walls, head gasket (warped cylinder head) and worn cam lobes.

Most likely a problem with the ECU and you will need to go to BMW agent to have it repaired as they have the right equipment to find the fault

It's not the timing belt, your car doesn't have one - you have a timing chain; it won't wear out, but could stretch after a couple of hundred thousand miles.

Believe it or not, it's probably the oxygen sensors or the catalyic converter.

could be timing
