t=turbo
d=diesel
s=sport
The s model should be nicer to drive but heavier on diesel

TD is basic TurboDiesel with 115bhp ( should be a ball in a 1500kg 5-series!)
TDS has intercooler, which ups the power to a dizzy 143bhp....
Even the petrol 520i has 170bhp & still does 30mpg.
The E34 type 5-series was a great car, I had a 530i, but they're HEAVY! Either of these old-school Diesel engines will really struggle to shift it, & will sound like a bag of spanners doing it.

tds has an intercooler where as td did not therefore tds was more powerful and much more desirable. Quite possibly the best model in the range.
